As a member of the division / market strategic and operational team, the DRMO is responsible for the identification, design, implementation, sustainment and evaluation of CommonSpirit Health’s risk management program designed to reduce the frequency and probability of loss and establish robust risk management operations at the division, market and facility level. This work includes the identification, analysis and management of potential and actual risk exposures (worker, patient, visitor, reputational, and environmental), claim management facilitation, insurance operations interface, information systems utilization and risk finance analysis. Together with national, division, market and facility senior leaders, the DRMO ensures the appropriate level and type of risk management resources are available, competent and capable of carrying out risk management responsibilities.
- Consult and provide support to division leaders on potential or actual risk management issues including informing them of potentially serious safety, risk or claim issues which may have significant financial and / or reputational repercussions including acquisitions, divestitures, service line expansions and other strategic initiatives.
- Collaborate with Corporate Responsibility and Legal Services to provide consultation, direction, support, and coaching to facility operations leaders on the investigation, analysis and action plan development following a high-profile risk event such as an allegation of abuse, drug diversion, an unexpected patient, visitor or worker death, large scale privacy breach, complex ethical dilemma, or criminal activity. This investigation may or may not include a root cause analysis.
- Collaborate with Patient Safety and Claim Operations on the implementation and evaluation of an Enterprise-wide process for early disclosure, communication and resolution, including financial, when unintended deviations in care result in patient harm.
- Collaborate with Patient Safety on creating a proactive high reliability culture at the division level through the analysis of loss trends, aggregate incident data, complaint and grievance patterns, safety indicators and other risk factors. Utilize this analysis to prevent future losses, reduce harm and increase risk awareness within the division.
- Identify service lines or departments with either actual or potential high risk of employee, visitor, environmental, or patient harm/losses and conduct a risk assessment or identify internal or external resources capable of performing the assessment. Work with risk owners and other key stakeholders to an action plan to address gaps.
- Partner with division, market and facility leaders in the hiring, orientation, management, evaluation and professional development of individuals responsible for the risk management function. Professional development includes coaching, mentoring, and elevating the role, visibility and credibility of the risk manager within the facility.
- Attend, as a permanent member, division committees including Nurse Executive Council, Quality and Values, Risk and Safety, Ethics, Complaint and Grievance, Medical Staff and other Division committees as appropriate.
Provide support to key stakeholders to ensure risk-related policies comply with accrediting agencies, state statutes, federal mandates and other regulatory organizations.
