GI Lab Tech

The GI Lab Technician under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse will assume the responsibility of assisting the RN in preparation of patients transporting patients and assisting the physician with all GI endoscopic procedures. Responsible for assuring appropriate decontamination testing and sterilization of equipmentment/instrumentation used in GI endoscopy procedures.


Responsibilities
  • Decontaminates endoscope at point of use.
  • Performs leak testing of endoscope prior to manual cleaning and decontamination
  • Cleans and decontaminates endoscope and all applicable channels per manufacturers IFU
  • Diagnostic testing, chemical and biological monitoring completed at prescribed intervals on the sterilization equipment.
  • Endoscope sterilized utilizing appropriate quick connects and sterilization cycle parameters are validated and documented.
  • Able to trouble shoot and address sterilizer failures per operator manual
  • Documents endoscope serial number, testing, monitoring, and five day resterilization appropriately.
  • Assists with diagnostic and therapeutic GI procedures, anticipating the needs specific to the patient and procedure.
  • Ensures that specimens are properly collected, labeled, and sent to the laboratory.
  • Handles and stores endoscopes properly.
  • Restocks, orders, and outdates supplies on a regular basis.
  • Appropriately uses high level disinfection, when indicated.
  • Participates actively in the universal protocol time out.
  • Appropriately labels medications and solutions on the sterile field.
  • Safely transports patients.


Qualifications
  • Surgical Technician graduate from a formal training program or one year experience as a GI Lab technician
  • Must be able to work in a fast paced environment with multiple interruptions.
  • Must be able to work varied hours to meet departmental needs.
  • AHA BLS card
  • Fire Safety card within 90 days of hire

This position is represented by SEIU-UHW and is covered by the terms and conditions of the collective bargaining agreement.
